From Danena Freeman - Dr. Sarah Phillips Seminar ...

"Hi I taped the seminar on my little tape recorder. Here is a break down of what I learned. If you like I can send you the tape. I just need you address.

Dew Positioning is the same thing as rain rot. It is also called by several other names but it is all the same thing. They call it different names depending on where it is on the horse. It is caused by being wet. It gets under the skin and causes scabbing. The scabs have to come off before it can heal. The hair raising up is the first sign and hair loss. On the nose and legs is the worse to deal with. The legs can swell because of it and be very painful. It cause thick scabs that are hard to get off. Insect bites and standing water causes it a lot on the legs. Straw bedding and treated bedding is thought to not be good because straw helps fungus growth. Keeping them dry is the best. The most common is a bacteria that acts like a fungus. Mites can make it worse. Moisture is the biggest cause of it. Treatment: If you can't get ahead of it put them in stall. Clipping hair to get down to skin. Remove bedding. Get air to skin. Biggest thing get scabs off. Anti fungal scrub into the scabs and let them soak to soften the scabs to get them off then get the scabs off. There are several products. Clean things in the barn that might have it on it. Wash your hands, blankets, saddle blankets, brushes. Use 5 gal bucket and add 1 part bleach to 3 parts water leave in for a least 30 min. curry combs work good for getting the scabs off. If it on the nose you can't use just any thing and you need to check with a vet about that area. They only use antibiotics when the first line of treatment doesn't work. Only use anti fungal if the mares are not PG. Only use bandages if the sores are so bad to soften the scabs on the legs so you can get them off. If you use a soap to wash the scabs off or bedadione make sure you rinse it off. It can cause burns if left on. You can soak the scabs for 20 or 30 min to soften them up and then scrub. Diaper rash med. softens them on the nose. You want to use thinks that is pauba free. Sour crout was used by 1 guy. He coats the leg then bandages it up. It changes the ph.  The most important thing I got out of it is that you have to find a method to get the scabs off for it to heal. And wash everything because you will just keep spreading it or give it back to the horse. I found a product that works even if they are left out in the pasture because it is oil based so the rain doesn't was it off. It is called MTG or mane tail grooming. PFI has it or MFA in Ozark and Ash Grove is the only places that have it that I know of. PFI is higher about 5 dollars then the MFA's . The frontline spray for dogs is good for mites and ticks for horses. You will have to ask Sarah where to get the frontline spray.

Sorry if this is kind of all over the place I was trying to type from the tape and I don't type that fast. Hope this helps. We are having a problem with our horses too. Everyone that I have talked to is having this problem on some kind of scale.

From Kathleen Hayford...

Yesterday our curious dog Mallie was sprayed by a skunk.  I called the vet to inquire about products to rid her of the stink.  ( I didn't want to even try tomato juice!)  The vet's office had products to sell but gave me a home made recipe that they said worked better.  I am happy to say it works!!!!!   The following is the recipe:

1 Quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 Cup Baking Soda
1 teaspoon liquid dish detergent

Mix in bowl and soak coat with mixture.  Keep out of eyes.  Leave on for 3-5 minutes.  Repeat.  You can then wash with shampoo.
DO NOT SAVE any leftover.  It is combustible.

By the way, the vet's office was Banfield in Petsmart.
